Joy - Arrival - Matthew 11

John the Baptist is in prison. He sends out some of his followers to ask Jesus if he is truly the king. John is wondering about joy and how can we have joy in following a savior who does not meet our expectations. But perhaps we can see the joy found in the eyes of those whose expectations have been broken, those who truly have something to treasure.

Faith - Arrival - Luke 21

What is faith? How do we apply faith? Faith is one of those things that is hard to talk about. It sometimes seems fleeting and faint, hard to grasp. Perhaps pictures will help us. Look at the faith of the poor woman giving two coins to the temple. When the world is difficult to understand, perhaps we should continue to look at images of great faith like hers.

Confirmation - Lord's Prayer + Apostles Creed Overview

Our Father Who is in Heaven,

We pray for our relationship with God and our relationship with others.

There is a statement that helps us share what we believe about our amazing God.

It’s called the Apostles’ Creed.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.

II Corinthians 13:13

We declare the trinity of God

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hope - Arrival

God’s people have been scattered all over the world. Babylon has come in and taken them over and separated them as far as the east is from the west. When will the good king come and bring us back together? I often feel just as scattered, having to run from this house or party to another this time of year. Even my family is scattered all over the country. I, too, am waiting for someone to bring us all together.

Christ the King Sunday

Just as Christ is “the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end,” at the close of every liturgical year, we look forward with renewed hope to Christ’s coming again in glory to reign as Lord forever. In the same way we look forward to our own resurrection and the time of a new earth — an earth that is no longer broken by sin and groaning. Christ will come again in glory just as surely as He came the first time — when He was born. So we have these three weeks of “transition” at the end of the “long green season” into the Advent Season: the new beginning of the liturgical year.

God's Promise - God's Plan

God has always been like a father for his people. And just like a good father, He gives His children what they want and need. So He tells us to ask Him for everything we need. He encourages us to ask Him for what we need and want, even when we have not been our best selves or when we have been wasteful of what He has given us. He is the Good Father and wants to give us good gifts.

QUESTIONS TO REFLECT ON DURING THE WEEK -

  1. What is a favorite gift that you have given?  What made that a favorite gift to give?

  2. Read Matthew 7:  7-12. What does Jesus invite you to do?  Why does he do this?

  3. Often times we can feel unworthy to ask God for requests because of our sin and evil.  How do these verses give you confidence to approach God and ask?
