[Sunday] Bitterness - Faith and Family Dysfunction

Jacob was always a fighter. He fought for everything and left an angry wake behind him. But when he was left all alone, his bitterness and the thought of sure death just around the corner, he was able to get relief from the bitterness and havoc.

[Sunday] Triangles - Faith and Family Dysfunction

Remember that time when you asked your mom for something and she denied your request? Then you went straight to your dad and asked him. Yeah, that's making a triangle. It’s bad, but we do that all the time, and yet it needs to stop.

Service [above] Sermon releases at 10pm [under]

Questions for the Week

  1. Describe a time when you were hurt by someone triangulating or gossiping about you.

  2. Read Genesis 27.  How does Rebecca triangulate to get her way?  What effect does this have on the relationships in her family?

  3. Read Matthew 18:15-20.  What does Jesus call us to do when we have a problem with someone?  What promise does he make to us?

  4. Who do you need to go to directly this week to be reconciled?

[Sunday] Named Anxiety - Faith and Family Dysfunction

Abraham looks at God's promises to him and tries to make them happen for himself. Oh, the havoc caused by not trusting God and who you really are! But God still brings peace with his promises.

Service [above] Sermon releases at 10pm [under]

Questions for the Week

  1. What situations have brought you anxiety? How have you handled them?

  2. Read Genesis 16.  How does Abram and Sarai handle the anxiety about not being able to conceive a son that was promised to them by God?

  3. In what ways have you tried to control things rather than trusting God?  How has that added to your anxiety?

  4. Genesis 17:1-6, 15-21.  How does God remind Abram what his identity is?

  5. How can remembering your identity as a child of God, a Christian or “little Christ,” bring you peace?

[Sunday] No Excuses - Faith and Family Dysfunction

Anxiety, pitting our family and friends against each other, group think, and bitterness - these all take life away from us and can cause us to live in despair. But when we look through the main story of Scripture, we see a family that is extremely dysfunctional, and yet God never leaves them, and we know them as the patriarchs.

Service [above] Sermon releases at 10pm [under]

Questions for the Week

  1. What do you think causes dysfunction in a family?

  2. Read Romans 3:23.  What does this tell us about our role in dysfunction?

  3. Read Romans 4.  Specifically look at verses 18-22.   How does God show His promise to Abraham, despite Abraham’s weakness?

  4. How have you seen God work in the midst of people’s dysfunction? How has God been faithful to his promises to you?

[Sunday] Someone Greater - Nostalgia

King Solomon had it all. Incredible wisdom, amazing riches, and he was even tall. Even queens from far off lands came to check on all his plans. But it all fell apart, like the Grinch stole his heart. And here we sit as if for a waiter, contemplating if there really is someone greater.

Questions for the Week

  1.  What is your favorite children’s Christmas book that you’ve read?  Why?

  2. Read 1 Kings 11:1-10.   Why do you think Solomon ends so badly?

  3. What are the temptations in your life that cause you to not “keep Christ in Christmas?”

[Sunday] Expanding Christmas - Nostalgia

The Gospel writer Matthew is starting small and common, the son of Abraham. But he quickly expands who is invited to the table to the poor, the tax collectors, and even those terrible Gentiles. It kinda reminds me of the Griswald’s Christmas.

Questions for the Week

  1. When you think of family gatherings around the holidays, do you prefer smaller gatherings or gatherings where everyone in the family is invited?  Why?

  2. Read Genesis 22.   Why do you think it would be difficult for Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, the son of the promise?

  3. Read Hebrews 11:17-19.  How do you see Jesus in this story of the sacrifice of Issac?

[Sunday] Christ the King

Just as Christ is “the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end,” at the close of every liturgical year, we look forward, with renewed hope, to Christ’s coming again in glory to reign as Lord forever. In the same way, we also look forward to our own resurrection and the time of a new earth — an earth that is no longer broken by sin and groaning. Christ will come again in glory just as surely as He came the first time, when He was born. So we have these three weeks of “transition” at the end of the “long green season” into the Advent Season: the new beginning of the liturgical year.

Service [above] Sermon releases at 10pm [under]

Questions for the Week

  1. Skim over Matthew 23-25.  What is Jesus primarily talking about?  How does it make you feel?

  2. Think of a time when things seemed out of control in your life. Where did you think God was in that time?

  3. Read Matthew 25:31.   At the end times where does Jesus say he (the son of man) will be?

  4. Read Matthew 25:32-40. How do the sheep (the righteous) respond when Jesus tells them all the good kingdom of God work they had been doing and welcomes them into his kingdom?   Think of a time when you didn’t realize when God was doing his Kingdom work through you as you were his hands and feet loving others.

[Sunday] Rain on Enemies - The Party

Look at the party the father is throwing. The whole town is there. Even that scoundrel Matt is there who stole from the father’s business. I can’t even believe he is throwing this party for that son who took everything from him. But did you hear about the drama with the older son? He is refusing to go into the party? After all it is raining on all the party.

Questions for the Week

  1. Describe a time you saw someone hoarding more than they should have.   What motivated them to act in this manner?

  2. Read Genesis 3:1-13.  How does the voice of the serpent try to tempt Eve?   Who do you think the serpent wants Eve to trust?

  3. When have you been tempted by this same voice, trying to convince you that you don’t have enough?  How does this voice move you to act towards possessions?

  4. In times of crisis, a scarcity mindset—focusing on what we don’t have—can easily cause us to cling to worldly goods. Do you experience this? What would you and others around you gain by trusting God’s generous love instead?

[Sunday] Jonah Chapter 4

Should I care? Jonah sets up a little camp on a hill to watch the show. But the show never comes, and he is left with a terrible sunburn. How could he have avoided all of this? Perhaps he could have not wanted the city's destruction.

Service [above] Sermon releases at 10pm [under]

Questions for the Week

  1. Who is your most bitter enemy?  What characteristics about them do you hate?

  2. Read John 4:1-4.  What do you think Joanh wants to happen to his enemies?  Have you ever thought that about your enemies?

  3. Read Jonah 4:5-11.  What do you think God is trying to get Jonah to see and understand through his questions of Jonah?

  4. Thinking back to question 1, do you see any characteristics of your enemy in yourself?  How do you respond knowing that God is “slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love” for your enemy and also for you?

Quotes from Sermon

6 The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 7 keeping steadfast love for thousands,[a] forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
— Exodus 34:6-7
Speaking form his hospital bed, Wilson described his last conversation with his daugher “She held my hand tightly, and gripped me as hard as she could. She said, “Daddy, I love you very much.” Those were her exact words to me and those were the last words I ever heard her say.” to the astonishment of listeners, Wilson went on to add, “But I will bear no ill will. I will bear no grudge. Bitter talk is not going to bring her back to life. I will pray tonight and every night for the men who did this, that God will forgive them.” No words in more than twenty five years of violence in Northern Ireland had such a powerfu, emotional impact
— Willam Ury, the thrid side...why we fight and how we can stop
This is the gift our enemy may be able to bring us: to see aspects of ourselves that we cannot discover any other way than through our enemies. Our friends seldom show us our flaws; they are our friends precisely because they are able to overlook our ignore those parts of us. The enemy is therefore not merely a hurdle to be leaped over on the way to God. Our enemy might actually be the way to God. we cannot come to terms with oru own inner shadows except through our enemies. We have almost no other access to those unacceptable parts of ourselves that need redeeming except through the mirror that our enemies hold up to us
— Walter Wink, Engaging the Powers.

[Sunday] Jonah Chapter 3

Vomited up on the shore of a new beginning, Son of Faithfulness must be reminded by God of his true calling. Will he grab the new beginning from God with everything in him, or will he just phone in another performance? Will the king come off of his throne?

Service [above] Sermon releases at 10pm [under]

Questions for the Week

  1. Can you share a time when you saw someone right a wrong or brought justice to an unjust situation?

  2. Read Jonah 3:1-5.  How much effort does Jonah make in bringing God’s Word to those in Nineveh?  Considering Jonah is a prophet in the Bible, what are the things you think he’s missing from his sermon?

  3. Read Jonah 3:6-10.  Here the king gets down from his power and throne and repents.  He then leads others to repent and hope for God’s mercy.  Describe  a time when you’ve seen someone repent and experience God’s mercy.

PLEASE CALL PEOPLE I realize I take for granted that people just come to the church on a regular basis. So that we all don’t descend into madness, let’s call and talk to each other regularly.  Phone directories are available for your convenience.

GIVING - We are here to provide “Grace and Peace in this Chaotic and Lonely Time” to those in our church and community.  Thank you for your past and continual prayers and financial support to Grace and your community.    We have added Paypal for online donations. If you would like to give through Paypal, please go to: www.GraceLutheranPSL.com and click the “GIVE” button on the upper right side of the page.
